The puppet film Three Etudes for the Animator comprisse three metaphors on life. The scene is a tiny stage of the Italian comedy, designed in the spirit of Watteau. In the first etude, The Mosquito, Harlequin wants to sing about the beauty of life, but a mosquito always prevents him. In the second etude, The Nightingale, Columbine gently lures a singing nightingale to her room, puts the bird in a cage, and while it warbles desperately she embroiders a shirt. In the third etude, The Rope, Pierot trips over a rope on the stage, wants to determine what the rope serves and before he finds out, his life comes to an end. In the epilogue, Columbine, Harlequin and Pierot thank the audience. Pierot and Harlequin start a quarrel over Columbine who finally leaves with a third man.
